40 in 2018: December

Books I read in November

A Classic:
**Book of the Month**
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by J.K.Rowling (Audiobook)
I was surprised to see Harry Potter on a list of 'classic' books, but when I discovered that it was published in the UK in 1997, won most of the British book awards that were judged by children and other awards in the US, reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000. as well as being translated into at least 73 other languages, and has been made into a feature-length film of the same name, then I decided that it has earnt the classification of a 'classic' novel!
I love the story; the coming of age of a orphaned wizard, who discovers a new family made up of friends, is one that is enjoyable and heart-warming. I also have a real soft spot for boarding school books (such as Mallory Towers, Trebizon, St Claire's to name a few) and have always had a secret wish to attend!!
Bookish Mamas:
This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay
November's book is the non-fictional diary of an obs and gynae doctor as he progresses through his training over 6 years. It is amusing, heart breaking, laugh out loud funny and sob out loud sad as Adam Kay shares snippets from his experiences. This is a must-read book to help us understand the stresses and strains our medical staff are under on a daily basis.

Unfortunately I missed the Book Club discussion on this book, but I'm sure it would have been a good evening!

Others:
Murder in the Vineyard (Maggie Newbury #12) by Susan Kiernan-Lewis
Another cozy murder; this time set in Maggie and Laurent's own vineyard, which leads to the arrest of Laurent and more investigations by Maggie. This book also touches on the dementia of Maggie's father and the impact it has on her mother, as well as the death of one of the main characters (queue the tears!).

Unforgotten (The Michelli Family Series #2) by Kristen Heitzmann
The second novel in this series continues the story from the first, as Lance uncovers more details to his past. The style of this book differs slightly as it contains Nonno Antonia's memories from her own perspective. The relationship between Lance and Rese continues to limp along with no real conclusion.

Kissing Christmas Goodbye (Agatha Raisin #18) by M.C. Beaton
In my plan to read lots of Christmas related stories, I dug this one out from the depths of my Kindle. It is from another murder mystery series based around the detective agency on Agatha Raisin and is  set in the Cotswolds. The story is light-hearted and quirky, and a fun read.

Best Murder in Show (Sophie Sayers Village Mystery #1) by Debbie Young
This was a freebie on Kindle; the kind where they entice you in with the first book in a series being free and then the subsequent books being sold at full price! The structure of the book made it an interesting read as the murder happened in the very first chapter (or prologue, I can't remember) and then we were taken back in time to a few months before. The bulk of the book is setting the scene and hinting at people's characters, and the resolution of the murder takes place quite quickly in the last few chapters. It was a very clever murder and one that I hadn't been able to guess, so that makes it a good book for me!

Books I hope to read in December

My plan in December is to finish all the unfinished books from the recent months (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Pride and Prejudice), as well as reading some easy Christmassy chick-lit! I am also reading two Christmas books; the first is a Bible devotional book of advent readings, the second is a light-hearted book looking at our British Christmas traditions and where they come from.

40 in 2018: November

Books I read in October

A Classic:
I didn't read any classics this month. The month passed quicker than expected!

Bookish Mamas Book Club:
The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
This was the first book I'd read by Karin Slaughter  as I have been nervous about how dark her books are. I love murder mysteries but don't like it when they become too much of a thriller and less of solving the case. (Btw, what a cool name for someone who writes murder mystery thrillers!) I found the book to be ok, but I'm not hugely inspired to read another by Karin Slaughter. It was dark, gritty and contained a lot of gory detail which I don't enjoy reading about. The story was set in Pikeville in the south of the USA; as such it had many similarities to an early John Grisham novel set in the same region. The story follows sisters Sam and Charlie 28 years after the horrific death of their mother, and injuries suffered by them, as they are involved in another traumatic event in their town.

Unfinished business:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Still going! This is definitely a dip in and out book for me at the moment...

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
I was expecting this to be a difficult read, but I've got into it really well. Unfortunately I haven't managed to finish it yet.

Library Lucky Dip
My library has stopped doing this for the moment, so no Lucky Dip this month!

Others:
Together by Julie Cohen
This was Bookish Mama's August book, but I wasn't able to find a copy in the library or charity shops. But I am so pleased that I managed to get it from the library this month and read it. What a great book! It is written backwards - not literally, but each section gradually moves back chronologically and fills in gaps hinted at in the previous section. I'm not sure how I can tell you more about the book without giving so much away! The story is about the life of Robbie and Emily, and the secrets that make up their life together.

Silenced (Alaskan Courage #4) by Dani Pettrey (Audiobook)
This is a book that I read a while ago on Kindle and accidentally bought the Audiobook as well. But as I've mentioned before, I enjoy listening to books that I have previously read. This is the fourth book in a romantic suspense series; these are Christian books which follow the McKenna family as they solve murders in their home location of Alaska, as well as the romantic lives of each sibling in turn. The 'whodunnit' kept me guessing right to the end! I also enjoy hearing snippets about life in Alaska. Hope to get some more Audiobooks from this series soon.

**Book of the Month**
Paddington on Top by Michael Bond (Audiobook)
A long car journey in our family is never complete without a good Audiobook to keep us company, and this month it was Paddington! And who is better company than Paddington! These short stories are entertaining and helped the miles pass by very quickly. We would definitely recommend these Audiobooks.

Secrets (The Michelli Family Series #1) by Kristen Heitzmann
I had got this book free on Kindle a few years ago and thought I'd give it a re-read. I enjoyed the mystery elements of the story as Lance discovered how his heritage linked with Rese's house, and the food sounded divine. But the relationship elements were uncomfortable as Lance pushed Rese out of her comfort zone with little regard for her feelings. I'm not really sure if I would recommend or re-read again.

A Gift from the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson
This is the 5th book in the Comfort Food Cafe series, which was published in October. These are enjoyable easy reads, featuring some fun characters, yummy food, beautiful scenery and a romance! This book is about Katie and her young son Saul who are searching for a home and end up in the village of Budbury. Christmas hasn't been Katie's favourite time of year, but this year her new friends help her to see Christmas in a new light. This was a lovely book start getting me into the festive spirit!

Murder in Grenoble (Maggie Newbury #11) by Susan Kiernan-Lewis
Another 'good old murder' from Susan Kiernan-Lewis! I love these stories where Maggie's inquisitiveness result in her solving a murder at risk to her own life. I really wouldn't want to live near Maggie as there can't be many people left!! In this book Maggie and Grace have gone on holiday to Grenoble to try and repair their fractured friendship, but an avalanche demolishes their hotel and everyone is stuck in the dining room whilst waiting to be rescued. As they wait people start dying and Maggie is in a race against time before she is murdered herself.
